Seven contemporary themes are addressed in the rooms: democracy, prosperity, solidarity, pluralism, migration, language and Europe. Each team is firstly presented from the perspective of the present day, then subsequently developed and explained through the history of Belgium. How did Belgium and the Belgians become what they are today? The galleries, with an excess of 200 objects, help to fill in the dotted lines and make the picture more complete. The objects, displayed chronologically from the nineteenth century to the present, make up what could be seen as Belgium’s “material memory”. Visitors can admire a lithograph by Magritte, crystal vases by Val Saint-Lambert, a Gilles de Binche carnival costume, and the first four-stroke motorcycle, among others. It’s an eclectic collection of everyday tools, artwork and design, scientific inventions, artefacts evoking Belgium’s rich folk culture, and so much more. Combining a strong exhibition design with artful displays and a gallery full of surprising objects, the BELvue showcases Belgium’s history with a contemporary twist. Located in a magnificent eighteenth-century building adjoining the Royal Palace, the museum immerses you in Belgium, with all the fascinating aspects it entails. It’s Belgian culture in the broadest sense of the term!

Christian Dotremont, founder of the post-war Cobra art movement and creator of ‘logograms’, began his career on the eve of the Second World War. At the age of seventeen, he became a member of the Brussels Surrealists, led by René Magritte. The Occupation, into which they were plunged shortly after the start of the war, meant that those surrealists who had not fled into exile struggled to continue their artistic activities. Dotremont was in the forefront of these efforts and a desire to resist through poetic means was mixed with an ambition to make his mark artistically. Following the Liberation, Dotremont withdrew from the movement of his elders and created his own more politically engaged vision of Surrealism, before founding Cobra. Through the works of Dotremont and other surrealists of the period, as well as through films, magazines and photographs, this exhibition recounts the troubled and little known history of Brussels Surrealism. The exhibition is an initiative of the King Baudouin Foundation as part of the Christian Dotremont Fund donation and is curated by Marie Godet. Practical information: Free audio-guide (FR/ NL/ ENG) available on your smart phone (app.belvue.be) Group visits: please book in advance Guided tours: available through our partner guide associations An accompanying publication (in FR-NL) will be on sale in the museum shop from 25/10/2019.

Liberating women and changing the world: feminism in Belgium in the 1970s
Liberating women and changing the world: feminism in Belgium in the 1970s
    • Price

      Normal: 0,00 €

In the early 1970s, feminists were out on the streets, where they breathed new life into old demands by demanding equality for women at home, school and work and in legislation. They also articulated a new view of the body, denounced stereotypes and violence and demanded a fulfilling sex life and the right to birth control. Their young, dynamic militancy prompted them to write, hold gatherings and demonstrations and organise joyous, noisy activities aimed at fostering a solidarity-based, egalitarian society in which everybody can flourish. Their demands and views remain hot topics today, for although undeniable progress has been made, a truly egalitarian society is still a long way off. An exhibition organised by the Archive and Research Centre for Women's History.
