Victor Horta and Jef Lambeaux are the respective authors of the classic tempietto with hints of art nouveau and the monumental white marble relief 'The Human Passions’. The title, the sensually writhing nudes and the wrinkled, to say the least, relationship between the two artist helped create the story and the scandal surrounding this pavilion in the Cinquantenaire Park. Thoroughly restored in 2019, it regained its pre-long closure grandeur. Victor Horta travaillait régulièrement avec le joailler Philippe Wolfers et réalisa pour lui un magasin avec atelier à l’ombre de la cathédrale Saints-Michel-et-Gudule. La rue d’Arenberg était alors connue pour ses commerces de luxe. En 1977, la famille Wolfers offrit aux Musées Royaux d’Art et d’Histoire le mobilier intérieur du magasin, tout en acajou. Depuis 2017, il est à redécouvrir dans toute sa splendeur dans la salle Horta-Wolfers. Tout comme à l’époque, nous pouvons y admirer de célèbres bijoux conçus et réalisés par le maître bijoutier Philippe Wolfers. Mais d’autres artistes art nouveau et art déco y sont présents. Découvrons ainsi un haut lieu de l’art belge. Par la même occasion, cette collection témoigne d’une époque riche en nouvelles technologies, industrie et entreprises, en même temps que des premiers pas vers la mondialisation, d’un renouveau politique et social, ainsi que du passé colonial de la Belgique. In October 1955, Josef Hoffmann (1870-1956), a central figure of Viennese modernism, travelled to Brussels on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Stoclet House, the project that came to be known as a “palace” and shaped his life and career. The enduring myth surrounding this building as well as the particular product culture that emerged from the craftsmanship of the Wiener Werkstätte (Viennese workshops), has dominated the approaches to his practice to this day. The exhibition JOSEF HOFFMANN: Beyond Beauty and Modernity wishes to offer a broader perspective by presenting Hoffmann’s artistry, for the first time in Belgium, as it develops through six decades of production. The timeless beauty of Hoffmann’s creations not only shows his relevance as a historical phenomenon but also as a source of inspiration for different generations of students, at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts and elsewhere, making him especially an international reference for postmodern practices. Considering the challenge of introducing Hoffmann in Brussels, this retrospective aims to provide a deeper insight in Hoffmann’s ideals and their evolution both due to and regardless of the diverse ideological and social circumstances in which they took form. The exhibition features a variety of well-known works together with rare pieces from private collections. The narrative is nourished by biographical details and new material on previously overlooked aspects; all to further extend our consideration of a leading figure of Modernism. The sections of the exhibition are oriented around one or more architectural models ––including a new model of Hoffmann’s pavilion for the Werkbund exhibition in Cologne in 1914––that serve as epitomes and key references to consider constellations of furniture, objects, designs, textiles, and documents. In this regard, a juxtaposition of multiple narratives is proposed, covering every aspect of Hoffmann’s artistic production: architecture, design, decorative arts, scenography, writing and teaching. In addition, focus will go to his creative method as well as his use of colour. This project is developed in collaboration with the Applied Art Museum of Vienna (MAK) and takes as its point of departure the major scientific work presented in the exhibition JOSEF HOFFMANN: Progress Through Beauty (2020/2021). The exhibition is a central event of the 2023 Art Nouveau year in Brussels.

This autumn, europalia will dedicate its festival to Georgia. From 4 October 2023, a comprehensive programme, teeming with exhibitions, performances, concerts, films, dance shows, theatre pieces and literary encounters, will roll-out across Belgium. In this context, the Art & History Museum will host a heritage exhibition focussing on the culture, history, and art of Georgia since the Neolithic period. At the crossroads of East and West, traversed by trade routes linked to the Silk Roads, and always the object of ambition of the great powers surrounding it, Georgia has been a place of encounters and exchanges from which it has drawn cultural nourishment. The result is a heritage of unparalleled richness. Wine, fire & myths Wine has been produced in Georgia for at least 8000 years. It accompanies a ritualised art of dining with refined cuisine, an integral part of the country’s heritage. As the oldest cultural asset in Georgia, wine will be the starting point for the exhibition. Metalwork – gold and bronze – will also pay a central role. From the Bronze Age onwards, Georgian metalworkers produced pieces of unprecedented delicacy and sumptuousness. The myth of the Golden Fleece has its roots in Georgia: the region was known to the Greeks for its wealth in gold. After the Greeks, who established trading posts there, numerous other powers would meet and confront each other on this small, coveted territory of the Caucasus: Romans, Persians, Arabs, Byzantines, Mongols, and Ottomans contributed to a unique intermingling of cultures, but also sowed destruction in their wake. A Christian country since the 4th century, Georgia struggled to assert itself in the midst of the great powers around it. It succeeded brilliantly between the 11th and 13th centuries, the golden age of Georgian unification, which shone economically and culturally throughout the Middle East under the reign of its emblematic sovereign, Queen Tamar.

Josef Hoffmann was een hele mijnheer! Hij woonde en werkte in Oostenrijk waar hij de mooiste gebouwen, meubels, stoffen en interieurs ontwierp. Zijn creaties passen in de Art nouveau-stijl waarbij kunst & versiering hand in hand gaan en de makers het leven van alle dag mooier en aangenamer wilden maken. Tijdens deze museumweek maak je kennis met het leven en het werk van deze bijzondere mijnheer die hier in Brussel een paleisje bouwde voor de familie Stoclet (zoek maar eens op!). We bezoeken de tentoonstelling Josef Hoffmann: In de ban van schoonheid en gaan zelf aan de slag met vormen, lijnen, kleuren en materialen. Josef Hoffmann était un grand Monsieur ! Il habitait et travaillait en Autriche où il a conçu les plus beaux immeubles avec les meubles, les tissus et tout l’intérieur. A son époques les artistes cherchaient à faire entrer l’art et la beauté dans la vie quotidienne : ils voulaient que les objets de tous les jours soient aussi des œuvres artistiques. Durant cette semaine au musée, tu feras la connaissance avec ce Monsieur qui a construit un palais à Bruxelles pour la famille Stoclet. Nous visiterons l’exposition Josef Hoffmann: Beyond Beauty and Modernity et nous aussi, nous travaillerons les formes, les lignes, les couleurs et les matériaux. Het Museum Kunst & Geschiedenis ligt in een groot park: het Jubelpark. Maar hoe brengen we het park in het Museum en het Museum in het park? Mag je voetballen tussen de Griekse vazen? (nee!) Kan je plaasteren beelden buiten zetten? (nog eens nee!). Wacht, ik weet het: we gaan in het Museum op zoek naar kunst gemaakt met natuurlijke materialen, of kunst die over de natuur gaat, makkie! En buiten maken we nieuwe kunst met alles wat we in het park kunnen vinden. Land art heet dat, ja zo worden we allemaal eco-kunstenaar! Le Musée Art&Histoire se trouve au milieu du Parc du Cinquantenaire. Mais comment faire entrer le parc dans le musée et le musée dans le parc ? Pourrais-tu jouer au foot entre les vases grecs ? Non, bien sûr ! Et peut-on mettre les œuvres du musée dans le parc ? Non plus ! Une idée : cherchons dans le musée des objets réalisés avec des matériaux naturels ou de l’art qui représente la nature. Facile ! Et dans le parc, on pourrait trouver des matériaux pour faire de nouveaux objets. Cela s’appelle du Land art… de quoi devenir des éco-artistes !
